Outdoor life around Dubai begins with sand, and the sand starts closer than most people assume: forty-five minutes past Sheikh Zayed Road the towers give out and protected desert takes over, holding Arabian oryx, sand gazelles and some 120 bird species. A safari worth paying for drives into that ground rather than onto the first dune on the edge of town.

The afternoon departure is the standard format: dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, a camel ride and dinner at a Bedouin camp under the stars, six to seven hours in total. Anyone wanting it calmer books the morning run: cooler, emptier, animals awake. Balloon flights lift off before first light and show the dune sea in low raking sun; some operators add a falconry demonstration afterwards. Water and rock come next: kayak routes through the Jebel Ali mangroves and the Al Zorah lagoon cross flamingo feeding grounds, while the wadis of the Hajar mountains near Hatta, ninety minutes inland, hold turquoise reservoirs, walking paths and mountain-bike trails.

One rule governs the calendar: the season runs October to April. From June to September even the desert sits near 35 °C at night, so everything shifts to early morning. When booking, ask whether hotel pick-up is included and how long the transfer takes; the drive out often adds an hour each way. Dune bashing is usually closed to pregnant travellers, small children and anyone with back or neck trouble; camel rides, camp dinners and Hatta hiking stay open.
