Dubai is not a walking city, and any honest guide starts there: distances are long, the pavement gives out halfway, and in summer the street is unusable on foot. A few districts still make sense only at walking pace. Al Fahidi is the first— nineteenth-century lanes of coral stone and gypsum, with barjeel wind towers over the roofs, a pre-Islamic form of air conditioning that drives moving air down into the courtyards. Those courtyards now hold galleries, small museums and coffee shops; the quarter takes an hour to ninety minutes.

The route then crosses into Deira: gold souk, spice souk, and the abra over the creek at one dirham. Dhows are still loaded at the wharf with cargo bound for Iran. On the far bank sits Al Seef, a new waterfront built in the old idiom. Modern routes work too: Dubai Marina, the JBR beachfront, Downtown around the fountain. Themed walks sell steadily — street art in Al Quoz, food circuits through Karama, photography at sunrise.

Timing matters more than the route. The walking season is November to March, when daytime temperatures hold at 24 to 28 degrees. From June to September guided walks leave before nine in the morning or after sunset, and the hours between are genuinely unsafe. Closed shoes, water in the bag, head covered. In the old quarters and near mosques, shoulders and knees stay covered. Al Fahidi can be walked alone and entry is free, so ask what the guide adds — the architecture, the trade history and the families who built it.
