Romantic in Santorini

Santorini keeps its reputation as an island for two for a strictly geographical reason: the caldera cliff faces west, and the sun sets straight into it. Everything local follows from that — dinner is timed to the sunset, tables are booked weeks ahead, and the best seats are not on land at all. A private catamaran or motor yacht for the evening settles the matter: you sit off Oia at the hour when its terraces are packed shoulder to shoulder, and you look up at the village from below, glass in hand and nobody at your elbow.

The daytime version runs at a different pace. The boat heads along the caldera to the Red and White beaches, where the rock is stained by its own oxides, drops anchor to swim in coves no road reaches, and lunch is cooked on board. There is also a version without a crew — a small self-drive boat you handle yourself: you pick the route by mood, stop where you like, and it is probably the only way to have the caldera genuinely to the two of you.

On land the romance is assembled from small things and short distances. An evening walk through Fira — down the steps of the old port from the main square, past the chapels with blue domes. The wineries keep terraces over the drop and pour assyrtiko along with vinsanto, the sweet wine made from sun-dried grapes. The villages inland — Pyrgos, Mesa Gonia, Emporio — have no caldera view and therefore no crowd: narrow passages, courtyards, cats, and an evening that nobody is filming.
