Self-Guided Tours in Montréal

Montreal's self-guided routes split between a wider downtown-to-old-town loop and routes that otherwise stay inside Vieux-Montréal itself. The wider walk strings together Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral and Victoria Square in the modern downtown with Notre-Dame Basilica, City Hall and the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel in the old quarter, a first-pass overview of both. The other three keep to the old riverside blocks: a puzzle walk casts the player as an envoy racing to document the quarter's stories before they're lost, weaving in three women the city still celebrates; a lighter trivia game passes Place Vauquelin's fountain, the silver-domed Marché Bonsecours, once Canada's parliament, and the Ferris wheel over the Old Port; and an audio app narrates the same ground.

The two walking games and the puzzle route all release clues at each stop with no guide and no fixed start; the wider loop and the trivia game each run close to two hours, the puzzle route a little under. The puzzle route leans hardest on story, tying trivia to the quarter's French and English history rather than just its buildings; the trivia game is the plainer of the two, scored so a group can compete on a shared leaderboard. The audio app leaves puzzles out completely, narrating each stop instead. Each costs a small fraction of a guided version of the same ground.

Practical. Montreal's winter is properly cold, January averaging near minus 5C with regular snow, so the audio app, which asks less of frozen fingers than a phone puzzle does, is the easier winter pick. Summer flips hard the other way, July averaging around 25C and humid enough that Old Montreal's cobbles and lack of shade start to matter. None of the routes here sells out or needs a reservation; the real risk in winter is battery life, which a cold pocket drains faster than the walk itself takes.
