Romantic in Dubai

Romance in Dubai tends to happen at altitude or on water. Above the city: dinner at At.mosphere on the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa, an observation deck timed to sunset, a helicopter loop over Palm Jumeirah. At sea level: a private yacht chartered out of Dubai Marina, a dinner cruise along the creek with a buffet and live music, or an evening that ends on the sand at La Mer or Kite Beach.

The third option is the desert. Private camps sit about an hour inland from Downtown, and the better ones keep couples away from the big group sites: dinner in the open air, falconry, stargazing once the floodlights go off, and with some operators a single tent pitched for two. Ballooning runs on the opposite clock — pickup near half past four in the morning, launch before first light, landing and breakfast done by nine, and only from October through April.

Practical notes: proposals and anniversaries run on extras — flowers, a cake, a photographer on the boat or at the table — and operators want at least 48 hours to arrange them, so ask when you book rather than on the day. Fountain-view tables for Friday and Saturday evenings go weeks ahead; midweek is far easier. Between June and September dining outdoors is punishing; desert and balloon season runs roughly November to March. During Ramadan daytime meals and some cruise departures shift, so have the schedule confirmed. Public affection stays restrained in the Emirates: holding hands is fine, more than that is not.
