Sports in Dubai

Sport in Dubai runs on two surfaces: salt water and sand. On the water, Kite Beach is the kitesurfing strip, the Marina handles wakeboarding, and flyboards and jet skis operate off Palm Jumeirah. Serious diving happens on the other coast — Fujairah is roughly ninety minutes by road, and both visibility and coral there are in a different class from the Gulf side. Out in the desert, the camps around Lehbab cover sandboarding, dune driving and horse riding.

Then comes the category this city stocks better than most: a vertical wind tunnel for indoor flying, a tandem skydive over the Palm with the fronds laid out below, real snow at Mall of the Emirates twelve months a year, and a spread of climbing walls. Dubai Autodrome sells race-taxi laps and full driving courses. Endurance riders and runners have the Al Qudra loop, 86 kilometres of tarmac through open desert, and the Meydan cycle track closer in.

Practical notes. Water sports work all year: the sea drops to about 22 degrees in winter, when a shorty wetsuit helps, and climbs past 33 in August. A certified dive needs your card and a reasonably recent logged dive; a try-dive with an instructor needs neither. Skydiving and flyboarding both carry weight ceilings, commonly around 100 kilograms, and desert operators set their own age minimums, often 16 to drive yourself. From June to September everything outdoors shifts to the hours just after sunrise. Check whether gear rental and insurance sit inside the quoted price.
