Take a vacation from the ruins of Rome to explore Ponza, Rome's hidden island. For hundreds of years, this small jewel of the Mediterranean has served as a haven for Roman vacationers and celebrities; now, it's finally possible to visit on an exciting day trip from Rome. At the same time, the beaches around Rome are busy and have poor water quality due to the adjacent commercial port of Civitavecchia. Ponza benefits from its remote location, which is 30 nautical miles from the nearest point on land.
Ponza has crystal clear, brilliant blue and turquoise seas with excellent visibility, making it a swimmer's, boater's, and snorkeler's paradise. This day tour from Rome begins at 7:00 a.m. at the Piramide metro stop. Here you will meet your knowledgeable English-speaking tour guide. After checking in, take an air-conditioned journey to Rome's nearest port, Anzio, about an hour away. We'll catch a nice, swift ferry to Ponza Island from here. The ferry costs 50 euros per person and is not included in the trip fee. You must purchase the ferry tickets at the time of check-in. The travel lasts roughly 1.5 hours and is a fantastic opportunity to nap before the exciting day ahead.
We'll arrive in Ponza at about 10:15 a.m. and take a short stop to have breakfast (at our own expense) or pick up any last-minute groceries or snacks to bring with us on the next part of our adventure. We'll board an excursion boat with other travelers (primarily Italian holidaymakers) at 11 a.m. and begin our round of the island. Our skilled skipper, a native Ponzan, will change our path based on the wind and waves to make the most of our day while staying in the calmest seas.
We will visit Ponza's most significant features, including secret coves, stunning rock formations, and a variety of blue caves, which we may even dive into if we're lucky! Your tour guide is a specialist in Ponza's fascinating history and geology and will translate all commentary given by your Ponzan skipper, who speaks only Italian. The Arco Naturale (Natural Arch), Lucia Rosa's cove and beach, the Guard's Light House (one of the oldest and most significant in Italy), and Moon Rock Beach - the stunning and famous "Chiaia di Luna" - are all worth seeing. We'll stop 4-5 times for 30 minutes each to swim and snorkel at the most excellent spots. Throughout the journey, our captain and first mate will cook a simple and delicious pasta meal served picnic-style on deck, along with water, wine, and even a typical Italian cappuccino. Not a fan of pasta? Make sure you have a sandwich or snack at Ponza's port first in the morning. The boat tour will end at 4 p.m., following which we will have an hour to explore Ponza's lively, colorful port with its numerous stores and cafés. It's a fantastic moment to treat yourself to gelato or maybe a glass of prosecco to toast a successful day.
We'll catch the same swift boat that carried us to Ponza back to Anzio, where our shuttle back to Rome will be waiting for us. We'll arrive at the Piramide metro station between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. Don't worry about train schedules, boat departures, or sold-out tickets; our all-inclusive Ponza Island trip takes care of everything, so all you have to do is show up! If you enjoy the water or wish to explore an area of Italy that is not overrun with visitors, this trip is for you.
