Begin in the Mountainous Village of Imbros
Your Imbros Gorge tour Rethymno begins with an early morning pickup and a scenic drive through the island's interior. The journey leads you to the village of Imbros, perched high at 700 meters above sea level. As one of the best gorges in Crete, the area promises an unforgettable start to your hike through wildflower-strewn meadows and rocky cliffs.
Into the Heart of the Gorge
The gorge walk stretches approximately 8 kilometers through narrow stone passages and high canyon walls. Within 30 minutes, the path reveals towering rock faces and one of the narrowest points of the Imbros Gorge, just 1.6 meters wide. The descent is moderate, making this one of the most accessible hikes on Crete, ideal for those who want to avoid the more demanding Samaria Gorge.
From Komitades to the Southern Coast
As the hike ends in the peaceful village of Komitades, youll be greeted by serene views and the chance to recharge. From here, you'll continue to Frangokastello for a guided visit of the Venetian fortress or, depending on the tour schedule, head to Chora Sfakion. Whether it's history or sea views you're after, this part of Crete offers a good balance of both.
Optional Swim and Return to Imbros
After exploring the historic fortress or relaxing by the sea, enjoy a late lunch in a traditional taverna. If you're up for it, a quick dip in the nearby beaches offers a refreshing end to your adventure. Then it's back to Imbros by bus, retracing your route through the countryside. Around 18:00, youll arrive back feeling fulfilled and inspired by one of Crete's most beautiful natural routes.
