The Top Sightseeing in Antalya, Turkey 2026: GetExperience

Antalya is one of those cities where the ancient and the modern coexist so naturally that you barely notice the transition. The old town of Kaleiçi — literally "inside the castle" — is a living neighborhood built within Roman walls that date back to the 2nd century AD, its narrow cobblestone streets lined with Ottoman mansions, Byzantine churches converted into mosques, and small cafes occupying courtyards that have been in continuous use for two millennia. The harbor at its heart is one of the most picturesque on the entire Mediterranean coast, a sheltered inlet surrounded by ancient stonework and filled with wooden sailing boats.

The most celebrated single monument in the city is Hadrian's Gate, a three-arched Roman triumphal arch built in 130 AD to commemorate the emperor's visit to the city. It is remarkably well-preserved, its marble columns and carved decoration largely intact — a striking reminder that Antalya, then known as Attaleia, was an important stop on the imperial circuit of the eastern Mediterranean.

The Antalya Museum, one of the finest archaeological museums in Turkey, houses an extraordinary collection spanning eight millennia — from prehistoric artifacts to the marble statuary of the Roman period, including a gallery of gods and emperors that rivals anything in Rome itself. The Hall of the Gods, displaying original statuary from the ancient cities of Perge and Aspendos, is alone worth the journey. Outside the city, the ruins of Perge, Aspendos, and Termessos offer additional layers of history in settings of considerable natural drama.
