Skydive Dubai runs two drop zones. The one everyone means is on the shoreline beside Dubai Marina, with the exit at around 13,000 feet over Palm Jumeirah. The other sits inland in the dunes.

What the jump is

Free fall lasts about a minute at roughly two hundred kilometres an hour. Then the canopy opens and you get five or six minutes over the fronds, the crescent and the marina towers. The whole visit runs two to three hours.

Most of that is waiting on the manifest and on the weather. A tandem needs no experience of any kind. Twenty minutes of briefing, the climb, then an exit strapped to an instructor.

The two drop zones

• The Palm. The view everyone books for, and the reason the price is what it is. Slots go weeks ahead.
• Desert Campus. Forty minutes inland near Margham, over open dunes. Quieter, cheaper, and a completely different picture.

The company has jumped here since 2010 and hosted the world parachuting championships in 2012. Two things sell here. There is the Palm tandem, and a cheaper Abu Dhabi jump with a car from Dubai and back.

Practical

• Booking. Weeks ahead for the Palm; it sells out further out than anything else in the city. Morning slots go first, when the air is calmest.
• Weather. Wind, cloud and visibility cancel jumps, and the call is made on the day. The deposit moves to another slot rather than vanishing.
• Weight. A limit near a hundred kilograms applies and is checked at the desk.
• Clothes. Trainers rather than sandals, and nothing loose enough to leave you.
• Photos. Shot by the instructor or a second jumper and sold separately, at a price that surprises people.
• Haze. Jumps run all year, but summer air flattens the view and the ground wait is hot.
