Stockholm Scavenger Hunt & Highlights Self-Guided Walking Tour

Stockholm County is mostly water — close to 30,000 islands, skerries and bare rocks spreading east into the Baltic from the city's edge — and none of that archipelago has a self-guided walk of its own; every route here sits on Gamla Stan, the single small island that forms Stockholm's old town. Beyond the walking games, the county holds Sigtuna, which calls itself Sweden's oldest town and still has rune stones standing among its streets, and Drottningholm, the royal family's palace on the island of Lovön — both reachable by train or boat rather than played through an app.
The three routes on that one island differ by story rather than geography. A general hunt covers the Royal Palace and cathedral, logging in with a ticket number and letting the World City Trail app's GPS do the rest, each stop readable or, with a spoken option throughout, simply listened to — around two hours. A ghost hunt and a troll hunt both unlock instead with a code sent to your phone, ghost stories and Nordic folklore standing in for a straight sightseeing loop, each closer to an hour. Treat all three as a capital pastime rather than a county-wide one: the wider county's own version of self-guided travel is older and simpler, a ferry to the nearer archipelago islands or a train to Sigtuna's rune stones, explored at whatever pace suits without any clues laid over the top.
Practical. July days in and around Stockholm reach about 22C and January hovers near 0C, while the open water keeps the archipelago a little cooler in summer and milder in winter than the inland streets. Archipelago boats and the Sigtuna or Drottningholm trips both thin out sharply once the warmer months end, typically May through September, while the three Gamla Stan walks keep running whatever the season, since nothing about a phone and a set of clues depends on a ferry timetable.
