Self-Guided Tours in Stockholm

Stockholm County

Every one of Stockholm's three self-guided walks is confined to Gamla Stan, an islet you can cross on foot in minutes and which has carried the city's oldest streets since the 1250s. Between the Royal Palace and the cathedral, a general hunt follows roughly the path any first visit here would take anyway. Swap that for folklore and the same tight lanes become something else: a ghost hunt behind centuries-old church doors, or a troll hunt chasing a mischievous escapee through hidden alleys and historic squares.

A phone sets the pace on all three, and nobody in the group answers to a guide. The general hunt opens with a ticket number inside the World City Trail app; from there GPS points the way, and every stop can be heard as easily as read, in around two hours. The ghost hunt and troll hunt instead unlock with a code texted to your phone — a dozen-odd puzzles apiece, an hour or a little more, built more for atmosphere than a straight sightseeing route, and both better suited to an evening or a family afternoon than the rush of midday.

Practical. Stockholm's July afternoons climb to around 22C while January nights fall near -3C, often over snow on Gamla Stan's uneven cobbles, so grip matters more than warmth here once winter sets in. Light evenings past ten in June make an after-dinner ghost hunt an easy add-on, while December's roughly six hours of daylight push the troll hunt toward the afternoon instead. Weather changes none of the three — they all still run.
