Three stretches of coast carry almost all of Dubai's water sport. Kite Beach is the kitesurfing address — flat water, dependable afternoon wind, and rental racks standing on the sand itself, with lessons sold by the hour. Off Palm Jumeirah are the jet skis, flyboard and parasailing, and that is also the spot the skyline photograph is taken from. Dubai Marina concentrates wakeboarding, towable rings and boat charters, and it is the shortest transfer from most hotels.

Diving is the exception to that geography. The water on the Dubai side is shallow and cloudy, so nearly every dive trip drives about ninety minutes through the mountains to Fujairah or Khor Fakkan, over on the Gulf of Oman. Visibility there runs fifteen to twenty metres, the shallower sites hold corals and turtles, and from May to September whale sharks pass through if the timing works in your favour. Plan on the whole day going to it: two dives plus the road each way.

Water temperature sets the calendar. The sea holds near 22 degrees in January and climbs past 33 in August, so at the peak of summer it is warm rather than cooling, and November to April is the comfortable window. Jet ski controls are handed over from 16 or 18 depending on the operator, and anything beyond a supervised try-dive needs a certificate. Before booking, confirm what the quoted price covers — wetsuit, boat, guide and insurance are charged separately by some companies — and whether an instructor rides along on a first jet ski session.
