Things to do in Manchester

Manchester is reckoned the first industrial city, built around water and thread. Cotton came in by canal and left by rail. The mills have gone; the routes they used have not.

Canals, mills and the first railway

Castlefield is where all of it converges. A Roman fort stood there and the Bridgewater Canal ended there in 1761. The world's first intercity railway reached the same basin in 1830.

• Liverpool Road station — the 1830 terminus, the oldest surviving purpose-built passenger station in the world.
• The Power Hall — working steam and gas engines, reopened in 2025 after six years shut.
• Rochdale Canal — locks cutting straight through the centre, under the bars.
• John Rylands Library — a neo-gothic reading room finished in 1900, free to enter.
• Northern Quarter — mills turned into record shops, with murals around Stevenson Square.

Turing, Factory and the bands

The second reason to walk this city is what came after the cotton. Two threads run through it. Both are addresses rather than museums.

• Computing — the Manchester Baby ran the first stored program in 1948, at the university.
• Alan Turing — the bronze on a bench in Sackville Gardens, unveiled in 2001.
• Factory Records — the label, and the Hacienda site now built over with flats.
• Guitar bands — Joy Division, the Smiths and Oasis, all traceable on foot.
• Football — Old Trafford, the Etihad, and the National Football Museum in the centre.

The tours sold here are self-guided almost without exception. You walk a route on your phone, solving clues, for the price of a coffee. That suits a city whose interest is spread thin.

Practical

• Rain. Over 800 millimetres a year, arriving as drizzle rather than downpours. Summer highs sit near 20C.
• Getting about. Metrolink trams cover the suburbs; the centre itself is crossed on foot in half an hour.
• Galleries. Manchester Art Gallery, the Whitworth and the science museum all charge nothing.
• Restoration. The 1830 warehouse and station are under a long conservation programme, so parts of that site come and go.
• Nights out. The Northern Quarter for small venues, Deansgate for the loud ones, Ancoats for dinner.
• Airport. Trains run into Piccadilly in about twenty minutes.
• Booking ahead. Match days and arena gigs move hotel prices more than anything else here.
