Romance in Vietnam comes down to light and water. Hoi An is the obvious address: on the fourteenth night of the lunar month the old town switches off its electric lights for lanterns, and most evenings you can release a paper one from a boat on the Hoai River. Phu Quoc faces west, so the sun sets over the Gulf of Thailand, and the usual way to meet it is from a boat with dinner. In Ha Long and Lan Ha bays the couples' version is a night on board in a cabin with a balcony. Da Lat, at about 1,500 metres, is the cool-air choice when the coast is sticky: pine woods, lakes and a cable car over the valley.

Most of what we run is shared by day and romantic by timing. The Hoi An format starts at 14:00 with a basket boat through the coconut palms and ends with the lantern boat after dinner. Ba Na Hills near Da Nang puts the Golden Bridge at dusk, with a buffet dinner at the summit; the private version is just your party, a guide and a car. On Phu Quoc, snorkelling days finish with a barbecue on May Rut Trong island at sunset. Private days run from half a day in Da Nang or Hue to a full day in Saigon. For a night on the water, Ha Long cruises take two or three days, and some cabins have private balconies and hot tubs. Two days in the Mekong Delta, sleeping in Can Tho, is the quieter option.

Practical. Hanoi and Ha Long are grey and damp from December to February, 10 to 20C, so October and November, the mildest and driest stretch, suit a cruise better. Phu Quoc is best from November to April, when the sea is calm; May to October brings rain and rougher water. The central coast, Hoi An and Hue included, takes typhoons from September to November. Day tours are usually free to cancel until the day before; cruise cabins are stricter, with some charging half within six days of departure and others sold final. At temples and pagodas, in Hue and elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees.
