Tours by Locals in Vietnam in 2026: The Best Sightseeing

749 experiences

Sightseeing in Vietnam runs on hubs, and every hub has its own radius. Around Hanoi it means the Old Quarter, the Temple of Literature (founded 1070) and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, then day trips to Ha Long Bay, to Hoa Lu, the tenth-century capital near Ninh Binh, and to the rowed channels of Tam Coc and Trang An. In the centre it is Hue's Nguyen citadel, the old town of Hoi An and the Cham towers of My Son, with Da Nang the usual airport for the last two. The south is war and water: the Reunification Palace in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi tunnels, then the Mekong Delta by boat.

Most of it is sold as a day out with hotel pick-up, and Hanoi sets the pattern. The Ninh Binh day takes ten to eleven hours in a shared limousine minibus, often with a group of about nine; a private car and guide trade the fixed stops for your own pace. A Ha Long day cruise puts about six of its hours on the water. Mai Chau fits a long day, but Sapa needs a night. Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang run the same logic shorter: half a day for the city, a full day for Cu Chi or for Hoi An with the Marble Mountains.

Practical. Choose the region by month. The north is grey and cool from December to February, 10 to 20C with drizzle, and hot and wet from May to September at 33 to 35C; March, April and October are the easiest months there. The central coast takes typhoons from September to November, and Da Nang's rain peaks in October. The south is dry from November to April, with highs of 32 to 35C. Pagodas, mosques and the Cao Dai temple ask for covered shoulders and knees. Most day tours are free to cancel more than 24 hours ahead; a few are final sale. At Tet, in late January or February, many sights close and transport fills.
