Food And Drink in Chania

5 Erlebnisse Crete

Western Crete is vineyards and olive terraces beginning right outside the city limits of Chania. You do not have to travel far: the first estates in the foothills are twenty to thirty minutes away, so a tasting trip fits into half a day. At the winery they usually walk you through the whole chain — vine, vat, barrel — and pour what is barely grown anywhere else: white vilana, red kotsifali and liatiko. Indigenous varieties here are not marketing but a consequence of isolation; the island lived off its own planting stock for centuries.

Olive oil comes second and gets explained on the spot. What separates a first cold pressing from the rest is acidity and the hours between picking and pressing; at the press they line up several samples, and the difference becomes obvious without any theory. Some programmes add cheese to that: graviera is made from sheep's milk in a copper kettle over wood, and the cheese-and-wine tasting is built around how the local pairs work with each other.

There are formats for the time-constrained too. For cruise passengers whose ships dock at Souda, half-day off-road runs to the wineries are planned around the departure time. A shuttle to the Manousakis estate is the option without complicated logistics: they drive you there, run the tasting, bring you back. And a private tour through the villages of Apokoronas ties the table to village life — lunch where people cook for themselves rather than for a menu.
