Itinerary

Moshi to Rongai Gate and Simba Camp. Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi. We will drive through rural Tanzanian villages to the Rongai (Nalemuru) Gate on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration, the trek starts through a lush rainforest where you might spot Colobus monkeys. We will end the day at Simba Camp for dinner and overnight.

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp. Today’s trek leads us through the moorland zone. You will enjoy vast views of the Kenyan plains below. We pass the Second Cave for lunch before heading toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The terrain becomes more rugged as we approach Kikelewa Camp, located in a scenic valley.

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn. This is a shorter but steeper climbing day. We head up toward the Mawenzi Tarn, which is situated in a high-altitude wilderness. The campsite is nestled in a spectacular cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is spent resting and acclimatizing to the higher altitude.

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut. We cross the lunar-like landscape of "The Saddle," a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is relatively flat but the thin air makes it a steady challenge. We arrive at Kibo Hut early in the afternoon to eat, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut. We begin our summit push around midnight. The climb to Gilman’s Point and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is challenging but rewarding with a spectacular sunrise over the glaciers. After celebrating at the peak, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut for our final night on the mountain.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi. After a final breakfast on the mountain, we descend through the moorland and rainforest to the Marangu Gate. Here, you will receive your official climbing certificates. Our vehicle will meet you for a transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved shower and celebration.
