Nature And Outdoors in Side

The outdoors around Side begins with water. Half an hour inland lies the Green Canyon — the Oymapınar reservoir, pinched between wooded slopes: the boat crosses it slowly, stops for swimming, and the water stays cold even in July because the reservoir runs deep. Closer still, about eight kilometres out, the Manavgat waterfall makes its noise: not tall but wide, the river dropping as an unbroken wall and breaking on the slab below.

The sea half heads west. Runs to Suluada island off Adrasan take a whole day: pale sand keeps the water clear, the swimming stop is long, and the drive follows the coast past the pine slopes of Olympos. The Manavgat river itself is navigable in its lower reach, and some programmes combine it with the market and the canyon in a single outing.

The active side is thinner here than in neighbouring Alanya, but it exists: rafting in Köprülü Canyon about an hour away, jeep safaris into the Taurus foothills, a zipline. Practical notes: nearly every departure collects from the hotel and fills a full day. Boat programmes call for a hat and sun cream, since deck shade is scarce; canyons call for closed shoes with grip, because the rock stays wet. The season holds from April to late October.
