Nature and Outdoor Activities in Vietnam in 2026: The Best Ways to Explore

560 experiences

Nature and outdoor tours in Vietnam are mostly limestone and water, and the north has most of both. Ha Long, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long are three bays of drowned karst, with Lan Ha the quieter, off Cat Ba Island. Inland the same stone rises out of the paddies at Ninh Binh, where rowing boats slip through the caves of Trang An and Tam Coc. Pu Luong, a reserve of terraces and bamboo water wheels about 200 km from Hanoi, and Sapa below Fansipan (3,143 m) are the mountain end. The far north-east has Ba Be Lake and the Ban Gioc waterfall on the Chinese border. Further south the landscape turns to the langurs of Son Tra, the canals and mangroves of the Mekong, and the forest of Phu Quoc.

Formats follow the road. From Hanoi, Ninh Binh with Trang An is a long day trip, while Pu Luong and Sapa are one- or two-night trips by bus, with a village homestay on the Sapa treks. The bays are seen from a day cruise or from a boat that sleeps you aboard, with kayaks or bamboo boats into the caves. Ba Be and Ban Gioc take two to four days. In the south the Mekong is a boat-and-bike day from Ho Chi Minh City, and the Phu Quoc islands are reached by boat from An Thoi. Groups are small, mostly up to fifteen people, and private versions exist.

Practical. Water decides the season. Terraces are flooded and mirror-like in May and June, and gold from mid-September to early October; by late October most around Sapa are cut. Waterfalls run fullest in the wet months. In January the bays are hazy and cool, around 16C, and the northern mountains are cold and often fogged in. Forest trails in the north turn to mud in the summer rains, so bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip. The south is driest from November to April, the best window for the Mekong and Phu Quoc.
