Duden is one river and two separate waterfalls. They lie about ten kilometres apart, and the two visits have almost nothing in common. Only the water is shared.

The upper fall and the cave behind it

Dudenbasi sits in Kepez, ten kilometres out, where the river drops some fifteen metres over a travertine lip. A footpath runs behind the curtain into a cave around forty metres long. You come out damp.

The source is the Kirkgozler springs inland, and part of the river's course runs underground. That is why the flow rarely matches the season you expect. Spring is loud, late summer thin.

The lower fall, and why you need a boat

East of the city the same river goes over the Lara cliff into open sea. The clifftop park looks down on it, which is the wrong angle. Boats solve that.

• By boat. Half-day trips out of the old harbour run along the cliffs and nose in close enough for spray.
• With a city tour. The old town, the cable car and the upper fall are routinely sold as one day.
• With Termessos. The mountain city and Dudenbasi share a half-day out of Antalya, and the pairing works.
• On your own. The upper park is a short taxi ride; the lower fall repays the boat rather than the drive.

Practical

• Flow. March to June carries the most water; by September the upper fall is a thinner thing.
• Footing. The path behind the water is wet rock and steps, so flip-flops are a poor choice.
• Entry. The upper park charges a modest ticket at the gate, and the clifftop park at Lara asks little or nothing.
• Time. An hour covers the upper site, cave and a glass of tea included.
• Crowds. Coach groups arrive from late morning, so the first hour after opening is the quiet one.
• Sea days. Boat trips are cancelled in a strong southerly, and the swell under the cliff is why.
