The Golden Horn is not a bay but a drowned river valley, seven and a half kilometres long. It cuts west from the Bosphorus into the European side. At its widest it measures about 750 metres across.

What happened in this water

A chain closed the mouth in 1453, strung from the old city to Galata. Mehmed II did not break it. He had his ships dragged overland on greased timber and dropped them in behind it.

The imperial shipyard opened here two years later and worked into the 1960s. Then came tanneries and factories. By the 1980s this was an open sewer, and clearing it took a decade of dredging and demolition.

Riding it instead of looking at it

Four bridges cross the estuary, and a public ferry line runs beneath all of them. It is the cheapest boat ride here. Almost no visitor takes it.

• Fener and Balat. Steep lanes and timber houses on the old city bank, reached by stepping off at either pier.
• Haskoy. The Galata bank opposite, with an industrial museum in an old anchor foundry.
• The metro bridge. A station stands out over the middle of the water, which is a two-minute view for a bus fare.
• Kayaks. Paddling trips launch from the Horn because it is flat, sheltered and free of ship traffic.

Practical

• The Halic line. It runs the length of the estuary and calls at piers on both banks.
• Check the return. Boats come hourly rather than constantly, so read the board before walking off into Balat.
• Shelter. Water sports here survive days when the strait is called off, which is why the operators like it.
• Swimming. Still no. Clean enough for fish and cormorants, not for people.
• The climb. Both banks rise hard from the quay. Balat looks gentle from a boat and is a staircase on foot.
• Winter. Low grey light suits the shipyard cranes and the wooden houses better than August glare does.
