Salda sits in the hills of Burdur province. The lake is at about 1,140 metres, its shore is white hydromagnesite sediment, and over the shallows the water turns turquoise. It drops to 196 metres, which is why the colour goes from milk to ink within a few strokes.

A lake that looks tropical and is not

The nickname is the Turkish Maldives, and the water is cold enough to correct it. The geology is the better story. NASA came in 2019 because the magnesium carbonate here matches deposits in Jezero crater, where Perseverance landed in February 2021.

What you may and may not do

Roughly 295 square kilometres around the lake became a special environmental protection area by decree in 2019. Two years later the rules got teeth. The stretch in every photograph, the White Islands, is now looked at rather than walked on.

• Swimming. Directed to the public beach and to Doganbaba, not to the White Islands.
• Numbers. Annual visits were cut to around 570,000, with 540 people at a time in the protected stretch.
• Banned. Mud baths, sunbeds, tents, picnics, and taking sand or clay away, which carries a fine.

The day it actually costs

Nobody sells Salda on its own. Every coach day pairs it with Pamukkale and Hierapolis, because two hours at a cold lake will not fill a day. From Antalya that round trip runs sixteen hours, from Side eighteen, from Alanya nineteen.

Practical

• Water temperature. This is high inland country, not a coast. Swimming is a July and August idea, and even then it is bracing.
• Footwear. The shore is coarse and granular rather than soft. Something on your feet helps.
• Supplies. Facilities are thin, so carry food and water; eating is restricted in the protected area anyway.
• The short version. Pamukkale is about two hours away, which makes it the only sane base for a half-day here.
