Tours in Cappadocia

Cappadocia does not look like anywhere else in Turkey, and the reason is roughly ten million years old: three volcanoes buried the plateau in ash, wind and water carved the soft tuff into cones and ridges, and people spent the next few thousand years hollowing the rock out to live in it. Tours in Cappadocia are less about ticking off monuments than about walking into them — the Göreme Open Air Museum alone holds a dozen rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes still on the ceilings.

The hot air balloon flights in Cappadocia are the region's signature, and they earn it. Baskets lift before sunrise from the valleys around Göreme, drift level with the fairy chimneys and then climb high enough to show the whole plateau turning gold. Flights depend on wind, so operators keep a stand-by day — plan the balloon for your first morning, not your last. On the ground, quad and ATV tours in Cappadocia run the dirt tracks through Rose Valley and Love Valley, and jeep safaris reach viewpoints that tour coaches never see.

Underground is the other half. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are cities in the literal sense: eight levels deep, with stables, wine presses, ventilation shafts and stone doors that rolled shut from the inside, built by populations hiding from raiders. Hiking in Cappadocia through Ihlara Valley or Pigeon Valley takes two to four hours and needs nothing but decent shoes. Most tours run year-round, though April to June and September to October give the clearest balloon mornings and the most comfortable walking weather.
