Dubai Harbour is the newest slab of coast in the city. Twenty million square feet of it were reclaimed between Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island. It is not finished, and it shows.

A port and a marina, not a neighbourhood

Two things happen here, and neither of them is shopping.

• The marina. Around eleven hundred berths, billed as the largest in the region, and where the charter fleet moors.
• The cruise terminal. Opened in 2022, it handles two ships at a time. Dubai's main cruise port is still Mina Rashid, further east along the coast.
• Bluewaters, alongside. The island that carries Ain Dubai. The wheel has spent years closed for works and its status keeps changing, so count it as scenery.
• The breakwater. A public promenade, and the best angle back onto the Marina skyline.

What the yachts sell

The product here is a deck and a meal. Boats run much the same loop past Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Al Arab. What changes is the hour and what comes out of the galley.

• Breakfast, two hours. The cheapest way onto a yacht, and the flattest water of the day.
• Lunch, two hours. The same boats under midday sun, which needs more shade than people plan for.
• Sunset with a live barbecue. The slot that fills first, and the price says so.
• Superyacht evenings. Three decks, a DJ and dinner, at roughly double a daytime cruise.

Practical

• Season. November to March. Cruise ships work the same months, and turnaround days are busy from six in the morning.
• Sea state. The water roughens after midday, and wind cancellations are called that morning.
• Shade. The district is spread out and has almost none. The walk from the cruise terminal to Bluewaters is longer than it looks.
• Getting there. No metro station. The nearest Red Line stop is at Dubai Marina, twenty minutes on foot or five by taxi, with the tram closer.
• Booking. Cruises are sold by the seat with a fixed boarding time, and sunset goes first.
