Things to do in Sharjah

Sharjah and Dubai have grown into each other, and the border is a road sign. What changes at that sign is the rulebook. Sharjah is dry, and it spends its money on museums.

UNESCO named it Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, and the city has built on that ever since. Things to do in Sharjah are mostly indoors and mostly cheap. The old town is the point.

The old town and the water

Heart of Sharjah is putting the pre-oil town back as it stood in the 1950s. The Museum of Islamic Civilisation occupies a former souk building on the creek. Sharjah Art Museum sits behind it.

• Al Noor Mosque. On Khalid Lagoon, and the one mosque here that runs tours for non-Muslims.
• The Blue Souk. Two blue-tiled wings of barrel vaults, full of carpets, gold and haggling.
• Al Qasba. A canal cut lined with restaurants; its big wheel moved to Al Montazah in 2018.
• The corniche. Dhow wharves on one side, the lagoon on the other, and a walk that works after dark.

Inland and over the mountains

Mleiha, an hour inland, is desert archaeology with a Bronze Age tomb from around 2300 BC. The Palaeolandscape of Faya beside it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2025. Fossil dunes surround both.

Sharjah also owns three pockets of the east coast, over the Hajar mountains on the Gulf of Oman. Khor Fakkan has the beach and the diving. Kalba has mangroves and a bird hide.

What sells from here

Most of it is the Dubai list, cheaper. Evening desert safaris run with and without the dune bashing. Sightseeing days cross to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Transfers are the other half of the catalogue, and they go everywhere: both airports, Ajman, Fujairah, Yas Island, the cruise pier. Hotels cost less than Dubai's and everything is twenty minutes away. That is the logic.

Practical

• Dry emirate. No alcohol is sold or served anywhere in Sharjah, and carrying it in is an offence.
• Dress. Stricter than Dubai and enforced in malls and public places: shoulders and knees covered, both sexes.
• The Dubai road. One of the most congested in the country. Peaks add an hour, which matters when a tour picks up at seven.
• The week. Sharjah's government has run a four-day week since January 2022, so the local weekend is Friday to Sunday.
• Museums. Most close on Monday and open only late in the day on Friday.
• Season. November to March; summer is above 40C and humid, which the museums answer well.
• Money. Taxis are metered and cheap, the dirham is pegged to the dollar, and tips run around ten per cent.
