Self-guided exploring across Turkey comes down to one city: Istanbul, where a strait splits two continents and an old imperial peninsula packs its monuments within a short walk of each other. Sultanahmet holds the cluster that makes a phone-led route possible — Hagia Sophia, a church turned mosque turned museum turned mosque again, the Blue Mosque across a garden from it, Topkapı Palace on the bluff where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn, and the sixth-century Basilica Cistern underground on 336 columns. Nowhere else in the country stacks this much history into one walkable stretch.
A couple of single-site audio guides handle Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern — half an hour each, a recorded voice standing in for a live guide, useful mostly for skipping the queue rather than saving money. A two-hour boat ride adds recorded commentary on deck while the vessel crosses between the continents, tea included. Longest is a walking hunt across the old peninsula: buy a ticket, download the World City Trail app, type in the ten-digit number, and GPS takes over. Each stop — Sultanahmet Square, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the tomb of Abdul Hamid I, the New Mosque, Galata Bridge — comes with a short story to read or, with a voice-over at every stop, just listen instead. Pause for tea by the Bosphorus or a snack near the Spice Market, then pick it up the next day.
Practical. Istanbul runs hot and dry from June to September, with days around 28-31C, and cool and damp from November to March, around 8-12C; April-June and September-October suit walking the peninsula best. Mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayers and longer around Friday midday, which touches the Hagia Sophia visit, not the cistern or the boat. A skip-the-line ticket only buys time at the door — the crowd inside is the same either way — and mid-morning is busiest at both sites. Comfortable shoes matter most on the hunt, since the peninsula's paving stays uneven for kilometres.
