Distances in Georgia are short on paper and long in practice, which is what makes a booked transfer worth more here than in flat country. Tbilisi airport is about seventeen kilometres from the centre, an easy run at any hour. Gudauri is the one that matters in winter: roughly two hours north on the Military Highway, climbing the whole way, with the last section exposed enough that conditions decide the timing rather than the timetable. The other regular run leaves the country altogether. Yerevan is five to six hours south by way of the Sadakhlo crossing, and the road passes through the Lori valley in Armenia, where Haghpat and Sanahin sit within a short detour of it — two medieval monasteries on the UNESCO list and otherwise awkward to reach. Kutaisi, where most low-cost flights land, is on the other side of the country from Tbilisi and a long drive rather than a hop.

What is sold is the private car with a driver, priced for the vehicle rather than the head, so the arithmetic favours three or four people and a family with luggage. The Yerevan route comes in two shapes: straight through, or with two stops built in, which turns a transfer into a slow sightseeing day and costs less than a tour would. Ski transfers to Gudauri carry equipment as standard. Meeting at arrivals with a name board is standard, not an upgrade.

Practical. At the Armenian border everybody leaves the vehicle and walks through passport control on both sides, which takes anywhere from twenty minutes to well over an hour depending on the queue — build it into the plan rather than the margin. Georgian and Armenian insurance do not carry across, so a self-driven hire car is often barred from crossing at all, and this is the main reason people book the run. In winter the road north can be held or closed after heavy snow; a same-day connection between the last ski morning and an evening flight is a bad bet. Child seats exist but must be asked for when booking, not on the day.
