Things to do in Kaş

Kaş was Antiphellos, the harbour of the inland Lycian city of Phellos. Its Greek community left in 1923. Greek Kastellorizo lies just across the strait.

Things to do in Kaş start with a few tombs and a theatre, all within walking distance of the harbour.

• Uzun Çarşı. The shopping street known as the Long Bazaar. The Lion Tomb stands in it, a Lycian sarcophagus of the 4th century BC named for the two lion heads on its lid.
• Theatre. An ancient theatre that faces the sea, 500 metres from the centre.
• Doric tomb. A square tomb carved into the rock of the old acropolis. Inside, a worn frieze shows 26 women holding hands, read as dancers.
• Cliff tombs. More rock tombs are cut into the cliffs at the edge of town.
• Harbour. Dive centres work from it, and the Kastellorizo ferry leaves from it.

Where the days go from here

Sightseeing in Kaş takes a morning. Most tours in Kaş are long days elsewhere.

• Kekova by boat. Full days on a shared boat over the sunken ruins, leaving from Kaş harbour or from Üçağız after a drive.
• Kekova by kayak. Small groups paddle over the sunken ruins in about five hours.
• Demre and Myra. Two longer days add Myra's tombs and the church of St Nicholas, one shared and one private.
• Saklıkent. An eight-hour safari to the gorge, with Xanthos, the Patara dunes and Kaputaş beach on the way.

Day trips from Kaş come shared or private. A shared seat is priced per person, while a private day is priced for the whole party.

Practical

• Weather. Highs reach 33C in July and August, and nights stay near 25C. In January the days run 16C and the nights 9C. Almost no rain falls from June to August, while December brings close to 200 mm.
• Getting here. Kaş has no airport. Dalaman is about two hours away by road and Antalya about three.
• Greece. Kastellorizo is another country, so bring a passport for the ferry.
• Shoes. The beaches in town are mostly pebble, and the Saklıkent walk goes through a stream, so bring shoes that can get wet.
• Time. Boat and safari days run roughly eight to eleven hours, and the kayak day about five.
