Things to do in Civitavecchia

Civitavecchia exists because Rome needed a working harbour. Its own natural port kept silting up, so Trajan built a new one here around 106 AD and called it Centum Cellae. The name, "old city", dates from the ninth century, when residents returned after fleeing Saracen raids.

A port, not a stop

Most people who land here are already looking past it, toward Rome an hour up the coast by train. That is the honest use of the town. It does that job well.

The waterfront still keeps a fort. Pope Julius II ordered it from Bramante in 1508 to guard against pirate raids, and Michelangelo later shaped its main tower. It stands right by the cruise piers today.

What's actually here

• The Etruscan layer. Tombs and traces near the port predate the Roman harbour by centuries; a private tour can cover them in half a day.
• Forte Michelangelo. Thick travertine walls, four corner towers, and a view straight down the length of the working port.
• Onward to Rome. Most tours sold from here are day trips to the capital or a Vatican visit timed to a ship's schedule, not sights in the town itself.
• La Frasca. A pinewood nature reserve on the rocky coast a few kilometres out, the closest thing to a beach day near the port.

Practical

• The train to Rome. Regional trains reach Roma San Pietro in about an hour and Termini in about eighty minutes, running through the day.
• Walking distance. The station sits under two kilometres from the cruise terminals, an easy walk or a short taxi ride.
• Ship timing. A Rome day trip from here means a long day. Build in slack for traffic back to the port.
• Port layout. Several piers serve different ships; check which one before booking a pickup.
• Weather. Summer on this coast passes 30C with little shade on the piers; winter days sit near 13C. Cruise calls peak from spring to autumn.
