Things to do in Pisa

Pisa was once a sea power. The Field of Miracles — tower, cathedral, baptistery, cemetery — is what's left to see of it up close. Florence took over in 1406, ending centuries of Pisan naval independence.

The Field of Miracles

All four buildings sit on one lawn and share a combined ticket.

• The Leaning Tower. Building started in 1173; unstable ground tipped it before it was even finished.
• The climb. Later floors were built slightly corrected for the lean, which is why the tower curves.
• Cathedral and baptistery. Marble façades from the same building boom, the baptistery among Italy's largest.
• Camposanto. A cloistered cemetery, quieter than the crowds at the tower a few steps away.

The university city

Galileo was born here. He taught at the university, founded in 1343, and legend has him dropping weights off the tower itself, unproven but persistent. The Scuola Normale Superiore, founded later, keeps Pisa a serious research town, not just a photo stop.

Practical

• Weather. Summer passes 30C with coastal humidity; winter stays mild, rarely near freezing, with more rain than inland Tuscany.
• Getting around. The Field of Miracles sits a walk from the station; an electric minibus covers the stretch too.
• Booking the climb. Tower entry is timed and capped; skip-the-line tickets matter more here than in most of Tuscany.
• Combining. Most visitors do Pisa as a half-day, then move on to Florence or Lucca the same afternoon.
• Combined ticket. One ticket usually covers cathedral, baptistery and cemetery; the tower climb is booked separately.
• Currency. Ticket offices and cafés near the square take cards; smaller stalls may prefer cash.
