Σχεδιάστε το ταξίδι σας — Dubai Creek

Dubai Creek is the reason there is a Dubai. A saltwater inlet reaching some fourteen kilometres inland, it gave the Bani Yas a sheltered anchorage in 1833. Pearls came first, then re-export trade with Iran and India.

The decision that made the modern city was a dredging job. Sheikh Rashid borrowed from Kuwait to deepen the channel in 1961. Bigger ships could enter, and the port business followed.

The two banks

  • Deira, north side. The gold souk, the spice souk, and the wharfage where cargo dhows are still loaded by hand.
  • Bur Dubai, opposite. Al Fahidi's wind-tower lanes, the textile souk, and small museums in restored courtyard houses.
  • Al Shindagha, at the mouth. Sheikh Saeed's house and the heritage galleries around it.
  • Ras Al Khor, upstream. A lagoon sanctuary where flamingos gather in numbers through the winter.

Crossing by abra

The crossing is the point. Abras are small wooden ferries, and they run between four stations on two routes whenever there are passengers. Five minutes bank to bank.

  • Fares. One dirham a head on a traditional abra, two on the air-conditioned boats.
  • Charter. A whole abra for a private circuit runs about sixty dirhams for half an hour.
  • Dinner dhows. Larger boats work the same water in the evening, and the cheapest seats are among the cheapest boat trips in the city.

Practical

  • Hours. The souks close for a few hours around midday and reopen about four. Abras run day and night.
  • Cash. Abras take coins, not cards. Gold is priced by weight at the day's rate plus a making charge, and only the charge is negotiable.
  • Al Fahidi Fort. Built in 1787 and the oldest building in Dubai, it has been closed for restoration since 2021, and so has the museum inside it.
  • Dress. Deira is a working district. Covered shoulders and knees matter more here than in the malls.
  • Metro. The Green Line runs down both banks, with a station near each souk.
