Nature and Outdoors — Antalya District

The natural setting around Antalya is genuinely exceptional — a city backed by the Taurus Mountains and facing the open Mediterranean, with a coastline that offers everything from long sandy beaches to dramatic limestone cliffs dropping directly into the sea. The Düden Waterfalls are among the most distinctive features of the local landscape: the upper falls are an attractive canyon park within easy reach of the city, while the lower falls plunge directly from a clifftop into the Mediterranean — a sight found in very few places in the world.

The Köprülü Canyon National Park, about 90 kilometers northeast of the city, is one of the finest natural areas in western Turkey. The Köprüçay River has carved a dramatic gorge through the limestone mountains, and the canyon floor — accessible via a Roman road and bridge that are still in remarkable condition — is one of the premier whitewater rafting venues in the eastern Mediterranean. The surrounding forest of black pine and cedar supports populations of brown bear, wild boar, and a rich variety of birds.

The Taurus Mountains that rise immediately behind Antalya offer serious hiking opportunities at altitude, with trails that ascend above 2,000 meters and provide panoramic views across the coast. In winter, the Saklıkent ski resort, just 50 kilometers from the city center, makes it theoretically possible to ski in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon — a combination that is genuinely available on the right day in February or March, and one that few destinations in the world can honestly offer.
