Suluada is a small uninhabited island a few kilometres off Adrasan, on the Lycian coast. Two beaches of pale sand sit on shallow, very clear water. Boats sell it as the Turkish Maldives.

An island with nothing on it

The name means water island, after a spring the old sailors used, and the spring is about the only human interest ashore.

There is no jetty, no cafe and no shade beyond low scrub. Boats anchor off and passengers wade or swim in. The rock is volcanic and the sand shelves off sharply at its edges, which is where the snorkelling is.

The day is the boat

Getting there is most of what you are buying, and the route matters as much as the island.

• From Adrasan. Forty minutes to an hour each way, with three or four swimming stops built into the route.
• Ceneviz cove. A cleft in the cliffs reachable only from the sea, and on most itineraries.
• Lunch aboard. Cooked on the boat and normally included; drinks are not.
• Longer versions. The same trip is sold from Kemer, Olympos, Belek and Antalya with a coach leg bolted on.
• Private charters. The same route on your own timing, which starts to make sense at four people.

Practical

• Season. May to October, with the sea warmest in August and September.
• Sun. No shade on the island and often none on deck either, so cover matters more than anything else you pack.
• Shoes. The landing is over stones in places, and reef shoes save the day.
• Wind. Trips are cancelled when it gets up, decided in the morning and refunded.
• Length. Six to eight hours out of Adrasan; from Antalya or Belek add roughly three hours in a minibus.
• Nothing ashore. No kiosk, no water and no toilet, so carry what you need off the boat.
