Sport in Istanbul is urban sport, without mountains or rapids. Water is the main thing here, though not sea water in the usual sense: an hour of kayaking on the Golden Horn runs along the shore past shipyards and bridges, while canoeing on the Bosphorus goes out where the current allows — the strait is narrow and busy with shipping, so the routes stay near the edge. From the water the city is seen from below, and that is the one angle no viewing terrace provides.
On land the choice is simpler. A bicycle tour of the historic peninsula gathers the main sights into two or three hours and solves the real problem of walking here — the distances between them are longer than the map suggests. Horse rides at the waterline run in thirty- and sixty-minute outings, at walking pace, with no experience required. The private yacht in this section is less about sport than about water without effort.
Practical notes. Kayaks and canoes go out in calm water, which in summer usually means morning; in wind they are moved. You need to be able to swim, and buoyancy aids are provided. The bicycle tour crosses cobblestones and gradients — closed shoes, helmet supplied. Account for traffic: central Istanbul is dense at any hour, so allow more time to reach the meeting point than the navigation app shows.
