Nature and Outdoor Activities in Georgia in 2026: The Best Ways to Explore
The outdoor Georgia that works as a day trip is made of limestone and water, concentrated in Imereti west of the mountains. Martvili canyon is taken by boat through a narrow gorge of green water; Okatse is walked on a steel gallery bolted to the cliff, after a long approach through woodland; Prometheus is a show cave of lit chambers and an underground river. East of the capital the character changes. Lagodekhi, protected since 1912 and the oldest reserve in the country, climbs from beech forest to alpine meadow against the Dagestan border, with waterfall walks of a few hours and harder routes above them. Borjomi-Kharagauli is one of the larger national parks in Europe and is mostly forest. On the southern plateau the Javakheti lakes — Khanchali, Kartsakhi, Bughdasheni — are shallow, treeless and full of birds, with the barely visited canyon at Tsalka nearby.
These sell as single days out of Tbilisi or Kutaisi, usually two or three sites strung together, since none fills eight hours alone. Group departures are fixed and cheap; a private car earns its cost when the party wants the canyons without the cave, or the reverse. Walking is modest on the standard versions — an hour here, two there — with longer guided routes in Lagodekhi and Borjomi-Kharagauli for anyone who wants a full day on foot rather than a circuit of viewpoints.
Practical. The Martvili boats stop after heavy rain, when the water rises and clouds, and that happens in any season. Prometheus holds about fourteen degrees year-round, so a jacket is needed in August. The Okatse approach is roughly two and a half kilometres each way before the gallery starts, which surprises people expecting a viewpoint. Both national parks charge small entry fees and register visitors at the gate; Lagodekhi asks for passports because of the border. Spring brings the waterfalls up and the wildflowers with them; the Javakheti lakes repay the drive mainly on migration, spring and autumn.
