Entertainment in Istanbul

Evening entertainment in Istanbul is organised by neighbourhood rather than by venue. Beyoğlu keeps the dense version: Asmalımescit and the lanes off Istiklal, where meyhane tables, small live-music rooms and rooftop bars sit within a few hundred metres of each other. Karaköy below it runs later and younger. On the Asian side, Kadıköy has its own bar street and a music scene that leans local rather than touristic, and the ferry back across takes twenty minutes.

The staged side is easy to find and worth choosing carefully. Turkish nights with folk dance and belly dance are sold mostly around Sultanahmet and on dinner boats; the same evening on the water costs more and shows you the strait lit up. Live music runs from jazz rooms in Galata to Turkish rock venues in Kadıköy. Football is the loudest option in the city: Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe in Kadıköy and Beşiktaş all play in the league, and a derby fills the district hours before kickoff. For families, the theme park in Eyüp and the aquarium out at Florya are half-day answers.

Practical: the night starts late here, and bars fill after ten. If you are going back to the European side from Kadıköy, check the last ferry, because the alternative is a long taxi around the bridge. Tickets for domestic league football are sold against a registered Passolig card, so a match is not a same-day decision for a visitor unless the tour operator handles it. Ask whether a Turkish night includes drinks and transfer, and whether a dinner cruise is a set menu or an open buffet, because both are sold under the same label.
