Tours by Locals in Georgia in 2026: The Best Sightseeing
Sightseeing in Georgia is organised by road, not by town. Three routes leave Tbilisi and between them cover most of what people come for. North runs the Military Highway, past the seventeenth-century walls of Ananuri above the Zhinvali reservoir, over the pass at Gudauri, then the Gergeti Trinity church above Stepantsminda. West is Mtskheta, where Svetitskhoveli cathedral was finished in 1029 and Jvari watches the two rivers meet from the hill opposite; an hour beyond, Gori keeps its Stalin museum much as it was arranged, and Uplistsikhe behind the town is a settlement cut into soft rock, inhabited since the first millennium BC. East is Kakheti, where Sighnaghi sits walled on a ridge above Bodbe monastery. The long southwestern day takes Borjomi, the rebuilt fortress at Rabati, and Vardzia — several hundred chambers carved into a cliff in the 1180s.
What is sold is the day out, and the real choice is group or private. A seat in a minibus with a guide is the cheap way to take Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe together. The same circuit privately costs several times that for one person and about the same for four, which is why families and small groups take a car with a driver-guide. The long days — Borjomi with Rabati and Vardzia, or Kazbegi and back — run ten to twelve hours, and privately can be slowed or cut short. Tbilisi itself is walked: the old town, the bath quarter and the fortress ridge take a half day on foot.
Practical. Departures are early, between eight and nine: driving time is the constraint, not the monuments. Entrance fees are small and rarely included; carry small notes for tickets and candles. Churches expect covered shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women; the busier ones lend scarves. The last climb to Gergeti Trinity is a rough track — a local 4x4 transfer or about ninety minutes on foot each way — worth checking which your booking means. Vardzia is uneven steps in full sun. Lowland afternoons in July and August are punishing.
